This Has To Stop

Saphy was sick of the teasing. She was sick of the poems, so caringly written that they ahd to be mocking her.

So when the note had said to meet here, she had been wary. But she had plucked up the courage, and here she was. It was sunset, on Friday evening. And she could tell her secret mocker that she wanted this to stop. To be honest, she was sure he wouldn't even be here.

She ran her thumb over the note attatched tho the last bunch of roses, which she had read so many times the ink was starting to rub off.

It's not a poem this time, but instead a request. Please do me the honour of meeting me in the Gardens by the silver birch at nightfall...

Kenneth was waiting on the bench when he heard the noise he looked around and quickly stood up, holding a single rose.

Saphy looked up. Her hair was still damp from her bath, twisted into loose plait behind her. She was in a long black dress, lowcut and also strangely casual. Over her shoulders was her normal black shawl.

"Look -" she said, moving to the silver birch. She had her eyes closed, preparing her speech. And then she opened her eyes.

"Hi..." Kenneth smiled. "I...I didn't think you'd come..." Kenneth said softly.

Saphy opened her eyes, and blinked a few times. And then a few more times.

"K-Kenneth?"

"Yes, that would be me...disappointed?" Kenneth said, hands shaking nervously.

"N-No... surprised," she said. "I... I thought... it wa ssomeone mocking me..."

"I told you to have faith, did I not?" Kenneth smiled, stepping forward. "And what did you say to me? No! Don't tell me..." he pressed the rose softly to her lips. "You said you were good at having faith..."

Saphy had the feeling that her legs had turned to jelly. She got a sudden heedy headrush, and she nodded mutely.

Kenneth smiled, stroking her cheek. "You want to go somewhere where the stars are as clear as spring water?"

Saphy looked at the rose still against her lips, and nodded slowly.

Kenneth pulled the rose from her lips and held it out to her. "A humble offering of my affections, m'lady."

She took it shyly. "Thank you..."

Kenneth smiled then held out his arm to her. "Shall we?"

Saphy took his arm, unsure what to do with the rose.

"Oh, pardon my manners, I forgot to tell you how lovely you look..." Kenny smiled, leading her away from the birch.

She blushed even deeper, and tucked the rose into the weave of her plait.
"You don't need to flatter me, Kenneth."

"Does it upset you that I want to?"

"It's... it's very sweet, but not true."

"I believe it is...."

She blushed, unable to think of a response.

"Come on then!"

Saphy followed him quickly.

Kenneth came to a ladder on a wall. "You first."

She blinked.
"What?"
